This slow-growing deciduous shrub is native to central and northern California. California Hazel typically grows in moist riparian areas and slopes. In spring, it blooms bright flowers that vary from red to yellow, eventually forming nuts that attract birds and small mammals. Plant in well-draining soil and under part shade.
